Market Overview (2018-2028)
Historical Market Size (2021): 5,064.5 KMT
Flue gas desulphurisation is a process of controlling the emission of sulphur oxide and other acidic components like hydrogen chloride from the exhausted flue gases off the fossil-fuel power plants. Limestone helps in cleaning these flue gases. Reportedly, more than 90% of the flue gas desulphurisation system capacity installed in the United States uses lime or limestone. United States’ major sources of sulphur dioxide, a toxic gas which is part of a larger group of chemicals called sulphur oxides (SOx), are emissions from industrial processes, for instance, electricity generation, boilers, petroleum refining and metal processing. Further, diesel engines and diesel- based equipment also add up to this. The most efficient removal is achieved by wet scrubbers, owing to their new designs, by around 90%. However, the COVID-19 led supply chain disruptions which halted manufacturing activities, led to a restricted market expansion.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock which is usually composed of calcite or aragonite, a calcium carbonate mineral. More than 50% of this mineral constitutes calcium carbonate. It is significantly used in the removal of pollutants from the flue-gas streams of industrial facilities. The acidic gases combine with it to form a dry product which is then removed from the flue-gas stream in particulate-control devices.
Based on lime type, the market is segmented into:
On the basis of process type, the market is divided into:
The end uses of the market are classified as:
Iron and Steel
Limestone is used as absorbent into cleaning the flue gases. It is continuously added to the absorber sump so that the cleaning capacity of the absorber remains constant. United States has a widespread availability of limestone deposits with large seams in Appalachia, the Ohio Valley, the Southeast (particularly in or near Florida), the Mid- and Upper-Mississippi Valley and in the Central- and Southern-Plains. Mostly, the cost borne by consumers is because of how far the limestone comes from and the way it is shipped. Some of the deposits have chemical grades as high as 95% calcium carbonate, which further exhibit effective results during the flue gas desulphurisation process.
